Cloud computing research and development trend

Abstract

Cloud computing is a new term that introduced itself as a solution to one of the perennial problem in computing, i.e. to reduce the costing on storage, power and hardware. In fact, most of us do use cloud computing in our everyday living unwittingly, like using the webmail and other applications online such as Google docs. This article discusses the characteristics as well as the trending topic about cloud computing.

Aside from being extremely inexpensive, one of the characters of cloud computing that's why it is widely used by most of the enterprises is its high extendability. Provided you have internet connection, even in remote areas, you may access your files and applications as long as its part of cloud environment. It saves the time of the user to access his file in a server and even to install applications in his computer. But even in this time, security is always an issue for it opens the data and pertinent information of the company to third party, in this case, the provider.

3 Things I Learned

  1. Cloud computing is a new form of technology meant to be used wisely. That's why we need to consider always the pros and cons of using it.

  2. Cloud computing saves a lot of money and effort to the company. But on the other hand, it is also susceptible to information leaks and privacy issues.

  3. In terms of education, cloud computing is very helpful for the administrators in monitoring their files and in providing access to their employees.

Application

I, myself is still weighing the advantages and disadvantages of using cloud computing. I need to read more articles and journals about the use of cloud computing so that I know if I will promote its utilization.

Abstract

The prevalence of open access journal is very evident nowadays. Open access as defined in the study of Park, Ji-Hong and Qin, Jian is the free-access model for publication of peer-reviewed, full-text scholarly articles free of charge to users. The goal of their study is to determine whether scholars are more incline in publishing their works in an open-access as well as to know their perceptions in using articles and researches in an open access journal. The researchers used, semi-structured interview and qualitatively analyzed the answers of their respondents, i.e. Phd students and faculty members.

The study yielded results which show the significant relationship of willingness factors and their perceptions in publishing their works in an open access journal. The identified factors that affect their willingness are the following: (1) journal reputation, (2) availability, (3) content quality, (4) topical relevance, (5) career benefit, (6) cost and (7) ease of use. The study concluded that it is very important to consider the factors mentioned above for scholars in deciding whether to publish their work on an open access journal.

3 Things I Learned

1. Open access journal is very helpful for scholars since it is free of charge and help in the dissemination of information.

2. Many things are to be considered in publishing your work in an open access journal so that your work will be recognized and help other scholars.

3. Open access will eventually play an essential role in the mainstream publishing. Factors mentioned in this study must be studied very well.

Application

As an information user and scholar, it is part of my duty to educate my colleagues as well as patron on the advantages and disadvantages of using open access journal, whether in publishing or accessing it.

Ensuring Access to Information: a Librarian's Dilemma

Abstract

Since librarians and information professionals play an important role in the dissemination of information, they must be equipped and they must learned the very concept of information ethics such as plagiarism, intellectual property and censorship. Atty. Aguirre discussed the reasons on how authorship as well as other information ethics serve as barriers in information access.

The study presented the distinctions between copyright and intellectual property. Copyright is a legal term describing rights given to creators for their literary and artistic works while intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. On the other hand, she also delineated plagiarism from copyright infringement. Using even a small amount of a work written by someone else without attribution is plagiarism, but to be guilty of copyright infringement, the amount copied must be in some sense substantial. Part of the study also mentioned the roles of the librarians in balancing access and restrictions.

3 Things I Learned

  1. As an information professional, it is my duty to provide access to information as well as to protect the intellectual property of the authors.

  2. There are plenty of ways to balance copyright and access to information such as proactive role in the development of fair use doctrine, library instruction, etc.

  3. Information literacy should be integrated in the curriculum so that students will be able to know how to properly access information.

Application

It is my duty as a librarian to balance information access for our students. And it is my duty as an information user to practice these principles by heart and with the best of my intention and ability.

Reference Service in Digital Age

Citation:

Lipow, A. (1998). Reference service in digital age. Reference and User Services Quarterly. Retrieved July 17, 2011 from http://find.galegroup.com/gps/retrieve.do?contentSet=IAC-Documents&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&qrySerId=Locale%28en%2C%2C%29%3AFQE%3D%28ke%2CNone%2C34%29internet+implications+to+libraries%3AAnd%3ALQE%3D%28AC%2CNone%2C8%29fulltext%24&sgHitCountType=None&inPS=true&sort=DateDescend&searchType=BasicSearchForm&tabID=T002&prodId=IPS&searchId=R1&currentPosition=1&userGroupName=phdiliman&docId=A54467211&docType=IAC&contentSet=IAC-Documents

Abstract

So much studies have been made about the implications of the internet to the reference services in libraries. In fact, many users are still asking if reference service is still needed since the presence of one-box-then-click seach engines are emerging and very popular. This article of Lipow underscored the immediate concerns of librarians as well as their dillema in confronting these problems in the digital age.

Lipow enumerated different scenarios in libraries which tends to show that reference service is declining due to proliferation on the usage of internet. From Lipow's words, for example, nowadays, we've expanded our area of service concern to those who use the library from afar, and we call them "the remote users" (as opposed to the walk-in user). But we've got it wrong. In fact, it is not the user who is becoming remote from the library; it is the library that is becoming remote from the user.

3 Things I Learned

  1. Empowering the librarians through proper education in the utilization of the internet is a must to strengthen reference service.

  2. Internet is not a barrier in reference service, but a tool and a big help for librarians to cater the information to the users in the easiest and fastest way.

  3. We need to refocus our mindset regarding reference service. If the users see face-to-face interaction not that cool, we must think of ways to promote them even make us, information professionals, available to the users.

Application

Internet is a powerful tool meant to be used to make our job easier. As a librarian, it is imperative that I must equip myself with the proper use of it and take advantage of it.

Finding Articles and Journals via Google Scholar, Journal Portals, and Link Resolvers: Usability Study Results

Abstract

Information retrieval is considered as one of the most important processes in doing research. It will determine where the research is leading and set the platform of the research being conducted. Dixon, L. et al. (2010) made a study on the challenges and development of different modern information retrieval system such as library webpage, finding full-text articles e.g. Journal Portals and Link Resolver and search engines such as Google Scholar. Aside from navigating the user interface and finding articles, the respondents were also asked about the usability of the web interfaces and had two related tasks in citation.

The study revealed that even though the respondents are familiar with the user interface of those information retrieval system, it is important to consider how each one operates when trying to find articles by using journal titles or by citation. They also found out that the respondents had a hard time and even skipped some of the tasks when they were not successful in finding articles. The respondents also got incorrect answers on questions on finding specific articles or journals using title. Lastly, they were able to identify that Google Scholar is one of the best tools, among the information retrieval used in the study, in retrieving information while library webpages and other library-supported tools should be user-friendly and effective so that students will have their reasons to begin their searches there.

3 Things I Learned

1. Information retrieval would only be effective if students will be guided and taught properly on the correct and appropriate use of different information retrieval system, particularly those that they utilized in libraries.

2. Improving and customizing the user interface of library tools in information retrieval will increase the potential of success in research and will save the time of the students.

3. Librarians need to be open-minded in the probable use of commercial tools like Google Scholar in finding information provided that they should be able to develop high level skill in information retrieval among their students.

Application

I will navigate and study myself the pros and cons of using commercial tools in information retrieval such as Google Scholar and Yahoo before recommending it to others as a good option in researching since most of us use the two as our resources in retrieving information. Dogpile and Metacrawler are also among the list.

Cybersecurity and school libraries

Abstract

Cybersecurity is a long overdue problem that parents and school personnels are facing. And since information explosion i.e. proliferation of vast of information in the world wide web, is one of the tools that triggers the problem in cybersecurity, Elizabeth Marcoux (2010) made an article about having a "symbiotic relationship" between the internet and the classroom. Marcoux searched for some websites that promote resources and pathfinders that will help students search over the internet in a more scientific and effective manner.

The article mentioned some websites that are intended in the efficient use of technology (computer) and internet access in K-12 education. One of which is the American Association of School Libraries Learning for Life (L4L) which created a resource guide that has several resources related in sharing of knowledge and accessing, ethically and legally, information as members of the society. Some other websites discussed include about cyberbullying, keeping safe in the internet world, being constructive when going online, among others.

3 Things I Learned

1. Children, as young as in K-12, need to be guided and taught on how to use the computer and the internet and the dangers it might cause to them so that they will be more vigilant in using it.

2. Integrating information literacy is one of the key solutions to make our students safe in the world where information is profuse. Recognizing when and how to access, use, manipulate, assess, record and package the information is the best armor that we can equip to them.

3. Promoting user-friendly, interactive and educational websites to our young ones will help in strengthening the security of our children as they enter the world wide web since you are rest assured that it contains resources where information is accurate and up-to-date.

Application

I will pursue in our school to integrate information literacy in the curriculum, but as of now, I will educate our students first in some ways to be information literate through programs such as library instruction and by assisting them in their research works.

Abstract

In the emergence of different sources of information through the web, the library needs to revolutionize its tools in providing information to their clientele. Li, Ruoyao and Bijuan (2009) made a study about the application of Web 2.0 technologies in catering services in the top 30 universities in China. The study selected the top 30 universities in China and investigated their library websites to identify the existence of different Web 2.0 technologies.

The study revealed that only two-thirds of the respondents used almost two(2) Web 2.0 technologies in their library and only one-tenth used at least four (4) Web 2.0 technologies. Among the top Web 2.0 technologies that the academic libraries used are the following: RSS, Instant Messaging, Blogs, Tags and Wikis. The study also found out that the low utilization of these technologies is because of problems in technology application, librarians’ value towards technology and lack of marketing among others.

3 Things I Learned

1. Librarians should parallel their service as well as their tools in providing information to the fast changing needs of their clientele. Using web 2.0 is one of the solutions.

2. Web 2.0 technologies would not be maximized to the fullest extent without proper marketing to the users and disinclination of the librarian in the use of it.

3. Librarians must simultaneously use web 2.0 technologies and in educating the users on operating these resources for their optimal use.

Application:

I would take advantage of the resources (technologies) we have in our library so that the school will see more importance of the library as an information gateway and in order for us to offer more library services.

Ethics of computer use: a survey of students' attitudes

http://find.galegroup.com/gps/start.do?prodId=IPS&userGroupName=phdiliman

Abstract

Computer ethics is a pressing issue not only in the field of information system, computer science and other related courses, but also in discipline such as business and other industry. This research by Lorents et al. determined whether Information system and Business major undergraduate students differ in terms of tolerance to ethical use of computer, services and products. The study used different scenarios such as misuse of information, hacking, illegal downloading and other unauthorized access of computer to indicate whether students viewed it as ethical or unethical using a Likert scale.

The study revealed that there is only a slight difference between IS students and business majors as they viewed the scenarios given as unethical, though IS students are little less tolerant in some modest breaches of ethics such as for personal use. The study also suggests that the motives or intent of the student plays a significant role in their view of a work as ethical or not. Personal use and intellectual curiosity are seen as somewhat unethical than for-profit purposes and with malicious intent which are perceived as very unethical.

3 Things I Learned

1. Unauthorized access of computer, illegal downloading, and other petty works of misuse and acquiring of information are very unethical regardless of your motives (personal use, for profit, intellectual curiosity, distribution, for non-profit institution, etc) and regardless of the gravity of intent.

2. Netiquette and computer ethics is a serious matter that it should be included or integrated in class subjects not only for IT and IS courses but across all disciplines. After all, we are all using and accessing information with the use and help of computer.

3. We, as information users, information providers and information generators, play a pivotal role in imparting and imbibing computer ethics not only to our end users but also to our family and friends.

Application

As I cater and utilize information, I will observe with utmost consciousness and knowledge the do's and don't's of accessing information so as to be a model of a true library and information specialist.
