Abstract
In the emergence of different sources of information through the web, the library needs to revolutionize its tools in providing information to their clientele. Li, Ruoyao and Bijuan (2009) made a study about the application of Web 2.0 technologies in catering services in the top 30 universities in China. The study selected the top 30 universities in China and investigated their library websites to identify the existence of different Web 2.0 technologies.
The study revealed that only two-thirds of the respondents used almost two(2) Web 2.0 technologies in their library and only one-tenth used at least four (4) Web 2.0 technologies. Among the top Web 2.0 technologies that the academic libraries used are the following: RSS, Instant Messaging, Blogs, Tags and Wikis. The study also found out that the low utilization of these technologies is because of problems in technology application, librarians’ value towards technology and lack of marketing among others.
3 Things I Learned
1. Librarians should parallel their service as well as their tools in providing information to the fast changing needs of their clientele. Using web 2.0 is one of the solutions.
2. Web 2.0 technologies would not be maximized to the fullest extent without proper marketing to the users and disinclination of the librarian in the use of it.
3. Librarians must simultaneously use web 2.0 technologies and in educating the users on operating these resources for their optimal use.
Application:
I would take advantage of the resources (technologies) we have in our library so that the school will see more importance of the library as an information gateway and in order for us to offer more library services.
